Candy Box Series

1997-2002

Just one year into making art, working from a tiny studio sublet in Hoboken I started collecting materials everywhere I went. An empty wood box that once held delicious chocolates was saved and while taking a class at the Arts Student League I created my first collage in that box. My teacher thought I was onto something and introduced me to the work of Joseph Cornell. My husband and I began to make similarly-sized boxes, and thus the Candy Box Series was born.

That first effort, inspired by a trip to Morocco, is called Mint Is A Must In The Tannery. Over 5 years, filling these boxes with recycled pieces of the past became the foundation of my early artistic work, until by 2002 I was ready to break out of the box.
